美國務卿柯瑞拒絕說法語

美國國務卿柯瑞小時候在瑞士寄宿學校念書，法語流利眾所周知。但他八日召開就任後首次正式記者會，記者請他回答問題時秀一下法語，他卻拒絕，引發討論。

六十九歲的柯瑞在華府國務院會見加拿大外交部長白鄂德後，兩人一起召開記者會。一名加拿大記者用法語問了有關「基礎超大油管」的問題，並請柯瑞回答時「秀一點法語」。法新社報導，當時柯瑞看起來完全聽懂這問題，卻面帶微笑地說：「今天還不行，我在那方面（註：指法語）還得多充電。」

二○○四年柯瑞代表民主黨競選總統時，法國反對伊拉克戰爭，與美國唱反調，兩國關係緊張，讓通曉法語的柯瑞備受奚落。一名共和黨人說，柯瑞「看起來就像法國人」。後來柯瑞敗給在任總統小布希，從此柯瑞對自己與法國的關係相當低調，包括他幼時多次在母親家族位於法國西北部布列塔尼的莊園過暑假。
